To transmit telephone calls over an IP network, including the Internet, instead of the traditional public switched telephone network, a VoIP phone or IP phone uses voice over IP technologies. The use of control protocols like Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), Skinny Client Control Protocol (SCCP), or various proprietary protocols is common in digital IP-based telephone service.

From a user’s perspective, IP phones operate in the same way as analog phones, with the transmission being the main difference. IP phones can transmit digital signals over the internet, which allows them to bypass the trunks and cables, as well as the fees imposed by telephone companies.
